SUMMARY:Fusion’s Promise: A Limitless Carbon-Free Energy Source
DESCRIPTION:Join MetroWest Climate Solutions for a discussion with Jessica Strunkin\, Community Relations and Local Government Affairs Principal at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). To register for this free webinar\, visit metrowestclimatesolutions.org. \nThis talk will describe fusion energy and how the same process that powers the stars can be harnessed on Earth as the ideal source of carbon-free energy. A giant leap forward on the path to commercial fusion energy occurred in 2021 when CFS and MIT demonstrated the world’s strongest superconducting magnet at the scale required for fusion power plant systems. This new magnet technology opened up the possibility of developing fusion power plants at a size that can commercially scale. \nFollowing this success\, CFS rapidly built a magnet factory in Devens\, Mass. and is using its first production magnets to build a prototype fusion machine\, called SPARC®\, to demonstrate net energy and the technology’s commercial viability. In parallel\, site planning activities are underway at the Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Chesterfield County\, Va.\, where fusion will be harnessed to provide 400 MWe of carbon-free energy starting in the early 2030s. \nIn July 2026\, CFS announced a $1 billion capital raise – the single largest funding round among fusion energy companies worldwide since CFS announced its $1.8 billion Series B round in 2021. To date\, CFS has raised $4 billion\, representing about 30% of the total capital raised by the fusion industry. \nOur Speaker: Jessica Strunkin joined CFS in her current role in 2023. She leads engagement with local communities and stakeholders to broaden awareness of fusion energy and to highlight the economic impact of CFS on the region. She regularly interacts with local officials\, business leaders\, educators\, and neighbors\, organizing quarterly community events at CFS’ headquarters for public education and interaction with the CFS team. She was part of the site search team for the first ARC™ Power Plant. \nSPARC® and ARC™ are trademarks of Commonwealth Fusion Systems®. \nPhoto credit: Commonwealth Fusion Systems \n

SUMMARY:From Canopy to Ground Layer - Building Soft Landings with Keystone Plants for Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Building Soft Landings with Keystone Plants for Pollinators\nThis presentation explores the powerful connection between keystone plants and the insects that depend on them. You’ll learn how to implement “Soft Landings” in landscapes of all scales from home gardens to larger managed sites. This innovative habitat design and management strategy focuses on creating lush\, drought-tolerant mini ecosystems beneath native trees to support pollinators throughout their life cycles. Participants will learn what defines a pollen specialist\, discover examples of these fascinating bee-plant relationships\, and understand how keystone plants function as foundational species in our ecosystems. \nYou’ll benefit from practical strategies on site preparation methods\, herbicide considerations\, and building a resilient plant matrix of sedges\, cool-season grasses\, and flowering keystone species. By the end of the presentation\, participants will be equipped to design and install a Soft Landings planting that transforms conventional landscapes into thriving sanctuaries for bees\, caterpillars\, and other beneficial insects. \nOur Speaker:  Heather Holm is a pollinator conservationist and award-winning author of four books: Pollinators of Native Plants (2014)\, Bees (2017)\, Wasps (2021)\, and Common Native Bees of the Eastern United States (2022). Both Bees and Wasps have won multiple book awards including the American Horticultural Society Book Award (2018 and 2022 respectively). Heather’s expertise includes the interactions between native pollinators and native plants\, and the natural history and biology of native bees and predatory wasps. Her work has been featured in the New York Times\, Minneapolis Star Tribune\, and many local publications. Heather is also an accomplished photographer and her pollinator photos are frequently featured in print and electronic publications. \nClick here to register for this free webinar
