SUMMARY:Fusion’s Promise: A Limitless Carbon-Free Energy Source
DESCRIPTION:Join us. for a discussion with Jessica Strunkin\, Community Relations and Local Government Affairs Principal at Commonwealth Fusion Systems(CFS). \nThis talk will describe fusion energy and how the same process that powers the stars can be harnessed on Earth as the ideal source of carbon-free energy. A giant leap forward on the path to commercial fusion energy occurred in 2021 when Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) demonstrated the world’s strongest superconducting magnet at the scale required for fusion power plant systems. This new magnet technology opened up the possibility of developing fusion power plants at a size that can commercially scale. \nSponsored by Metrowest Climate Solutions and CFREE Lincoln.

SUMMARY:Fusion’s Promise: A Limitless Carbon-Free Energy Source
DESCRIPTION:Join MetroWest Climate Solutions for a discussion with Jessica Strunkin\, Community Relations and Local Government Affairs Principal at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). To register for this free webinar\, visit metrowestclimatesolutions.org. \nThis talk will describe fusion energy and how the same process that powers the stars can be harnessed on Earth as the ideal source of carbon-free energy. A giant leap forward on the path to commercial fusion energy occurred in 2021 when CFS and MIT demonstrated the world’s strongest superconducting magnet at the scale required for fusion power plant systems. This new magnet technology opened up the possibility of developing fusion power plants at a size that can commercially scale. \nFollowing this success\, CFS rapidly built a magnet factory in Devens\, Mass. and is using its first production magnets to build a prototype fusion machine\, called SPARC®\, to demonstrate net energy and the technology’s commercial viability. In parallel\, site planning activities are underway at the Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Chesterfield County\, Va.\, where fusion will be harnessed to provide 400 MWe of carbon-free energy starting in the early 2030s. \nIn July 2026\, CFS announced a $1 billion capital raise – the single largest funding round among fusion energy companies worldwide since CFS announced its $1.8 billion Series B round in 2021. To date\, CFS has raised $4 billion\, representing about 30% of the total capital raised by the fusion industry. \nOur Speaker: Jessica Strunkin joined CFS in her current role in 2023. She leads engagement with local communities and stakeholders to broaden awareness of fusion energy and to highlight the economic impact of CFS on the region. She regularly interacts with local officials\, business leaders\, educators\, and neighbors\, organizing quarterly community events at CFS’ headquarters for public education and interaction with the CFS team. She was part of the site search team for the first ARC™ Power Plant. \nSPARC® and ARC™ are trademarks of Commonwealth Fusion Systems®. \nPhoto credit: Commonwealth Fusion Systems \n

SUMMARY:Repair Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Bring your broken lamps\, small furniture\, bikes\, small appliances\, jewelry\, and even textiles! \nOn Sunday\, October 18\, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, the Westwood Environmental Action Committee and Charles River Repair Coalition will host their quarterly Repair Café. \nAt repair cafés\, individuals bring broken items to volunteers who donate their time and tools to fix those items. Repair cafés are part of a grassroots movement aimed at reducing consumption and waste while also fostering community bonding. Since 2009\, when the first repair café took place in Amsterdam\, the Netherlands\, repair cafés have proliferated throughout the world. \nHow it Works: \n1. Show up with the items you want to have repaired. Fixable items include bicycles\, clothing\, jewelry\, lamps\, small furniture and small appliances. \n2. One of our “fixers” – volunteers with particular repair skills and tools – will fix your item. Please note: fixing is free but not guaranteed. If your items needs a replacement part\, you will need to buy or reimburse the fixer for the part. Some basic parts are available for purchase on site. \n3. Mingle with neighbors and enjoy drinks and snacks provided at the event. \nMill Forge Makerspace\n61 Endicott Street\nBuilding 46\nNorwood\, MA \nEvent description from the Westwood Minute.

SUMMARY:Weathering Change with Meteorologist David Epstein
DESCRIPTION:Weathering Change:  Small Steps\, Real Connection & a Livable Planet.  \nJoin Boston Globe Columnist and WGBH Morning Edition Meteorologist David Epstein for a thought-provoking and optimistic conversation about our changing climate\, our connection to the natural world\, and why the small choices we make everyday matter. \nEpstein has spent his career watching the sky\, tracking storms\, and paying close attention to what’s changing. In this presentation\, he steps back from the forecast to explore something bigger: how we see ourselves in relation to the natural world and the impact of our daily actions. \nClimate change is part of the conversation\, but so is something more hopeful. Epstein makes the case that we are not separate from nature\, we are part of it\, and that the small choices we make each day matter: planting native species\, appreciating our yards and Medfield’s open spaces\, and living lighter on the earth. Not because any one of them solves the problem\, but because they change how we live inside it. \nExpect science\, humor\, some hard truths\, and a genuinely optimistic path forward. \nResidents of Medfield and surrounding communities are invited to attend. \nDavid Epstein is the Morning Edition meteorologist for WGBH and a weather columnist for the Boston Globe. He graduated from Colby College and studied meteorology at Lyndon State College. He also holds a master’s degree in education and an MBA from Boston College. \nThe evening is presented by Sustainable Medfield with funding from the Medfield Foundation’s Legacy Fund\, which gives grants to community nonprofit causes\, supporting Medfield today and over the long term. Sustainable Medfield is an initiative of the Medfield Foundation. Go to MedfieldFoundation.org to learn more. \n \nThank you to the Medfield Foundation Legacy Fund!  \nAbout our Speaker……\n \nDavid Epstein has been a meteorologist and horticulturalist for over 35 years. David grew up in Portland Maine attending their public schools and graduated from Colby College. His first job was teaching 8th grade science at his former junior high. He has been an educator ever since including his 17 years in the classroom teaching a meteorology course at his alma mater Colby College from 2006-2023. He studied meteorology at Lyndon State College and has a Masters in Education and an MBA both from Boston College. He is currently on the board of the Natick Community. Organic Farm. \nDavid writes for the Boston Globe David and is the meteorologist for ‘GBH Boston’s local NPR. He has been an on-air meteorologist at various stations throughout New England including WBZ CH 4 and WCVB CH 5. 2006\, David founded Growing Wisdom\, a business producing educational and marketing videos and can be found on his YouTube channel of the same name. SUMMARY:Do Good Day
DESCRIPTION:Bellforge’s Young Families Advisory Council presents Do Good Day: Good Vibes\, Great Causes — a day dedicated to giving back and lifting up our community\, all in one meaningful\, joy-filled experience. \nThat bag of clothes by the door. The stack of books you’ve been meaning to donate. The old pumpkin ready for compost. Do Good Day brings it all together in one place\, making it easy to donate\, recycle\, and compost responsibly. Sometimes caring for a community begins by simply taking a second look at what we already have. Clothing\, books\, nonperishable food\, old pumpkins\, mums\, and other compostable plants are all welcome. Whether it is a single donation or several — every contribution plays a part. \nThroughout the afternoon\, discover local organizations making an impact\, learn practical ways to reduce waste and support our community\, and find new ways to stay involved long after the event ends. \nThere’s something encouraging about seeing so many people arrive with something to offer. Do Good Day brings those individual acts together\, reminding us that caring for our neighbors and the places we share often feels more impactful and fun when alongside one another.
